Dark Star Pictures and Red Water Entertainment have teamed to secure North American rights to Chainsaws Were Singing, an Estonian feature that fuses action, horror, music, and comedy into a single midnight-friendly package. The companies will debut the film in theaters across the United States and Canada in Fall 2025, followed by a digital and on-demand launch.

Billed as “Monty Python meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets Les Misérables,” the story tracks two new lovers whose relationship is torn apart—literally—by a chainsaw-wielding killer, propelling them into a blood-soaked quest packed with grief, satire, and full-throated musical set pieces. Shot guerilla-style, the project pays homage to B-movie spectacle while embracing crowd-pleasing mayhem.

Festival accolades underscore the film’s niche appeal: Best Horror Movie at Fantastic Fest 2024, a Special Jury Mention for Best First Feature at Fantasia 2024, and Best Film at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2024, alongside screenings at Sitges, Tallinn Black Nights, and Night Visions.

“We’re always on the lookout for films that break the mold, and Chainsaws Were Singing does that with a chainsaw and a show tune,” said Avi Federgreen, President of Red Water Entertainment. Dark Star’s Michael Repsch added, “This is the kind of fearless cinema that reminds you why we go to the movies. It’s poised to become a midnight favorite.”

Repsch and Federgreen negotiated the acquisition with Justyna Koronkiewicz of Media Move on behalf of the filmmakers.
