Halloween Horror Nights returns to Universal Studios Hollywood for its 2026 run September 3 through November 1, bringing nine haunted houses, a stunt spectacular, and six scare zones to the backlot. This year leans hard into recognizable horror: Sinners, Stranger Things 5, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness, Killer Klownz from Outer Space, Dead, Deader, Deadest, Killceañera: Music by Slash, and Terror Tram Starring Art the Clown, plus The Purge: Dangerous Waters stunt show.

Several of these houses are built directly from real films, which makes this list an easy one — watch the source material and you’ll walk in already knowing what’s coming for you.

Streaming availability was verified August 28, 2026.

1. Sinners (2025) — for Sinners

This is about as direct a pairing as they come — the Sinners house recreates Ryan Coogler’s 1930s Mississippi juke joint down to the blood-soaked blues, with the Smokestack Twins and Remmick’s vampire crew crashing the party. Watching the film first means you’ll recognize every beat of the maze, from the music to the massacre.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) — for Stranger Things 5

Stranger Things 5 drops guests into the Upside Down to face Vecna and the Mind Flayer — and Vecna himself has always worn his Freddy Krueger influence openly. Revisiting the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is the perfect primer on where that burned, clawed, dream-stalking archetype actually came from.

3. Hellraiser (1987) — for Hellraiser

Another one-to-one pairing: the Hellraiser house pulls straight from Clive Barker’s original trilogy, putting guests face to face with Pinhead and the Cenobites’ rituals. The 1987 original is still the sharpest, most unsettling entry point before you walk through Hell’s depths yourself.

4. Evil Dead Rise (2023) — for Evil Dead Burn

Evil Dead Burn reopens the Book of the Dead and lets an infernal force consume a family home — practically a direct nod to the franchise’s most recent, most claustrophobic entry. Evil Dead Rise traded the cabin in the woods for an apartment building and lost none of the franchise’s gleeful brutality.

5. Deathgasm (2015) — for Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness

Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness builds a decaying world out of the rock legend’s imagery and lyrics, so match that energy with Deathgasm — a horror comedy where a heavy metal riff literally summons demons. It’s the loudest, most gleefully unhinged pairing on this list, and that’s exactly the point.

6. Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) — for Killer Klownz from Outer Space

The house’s name alone tells you the assignment. The 1988 cult classic invented the entire “gooey, gruesome” alien clown aesthetic this maze is built to recreate, cotton-candy cocoons and all — required viewing before you become a snack yourself.

7. Re-Animator (1985) — for Dead, Deader, Deadest

Re-Animator (1985) movie poster

Dead, Deader, Deadest is built on a miracle drug backfiring at a funeral home and resurrecting a century’s worth of corpses — which is essentially the plot of Re-Animator, minus the funeral home. Stuart Gordon’s gory, gleeful classic wrote the book on reanimation-gone-wrong horror comedy.

8. The Curse of La Llorona (2019) — for Killceañera: Music by Slash

Killceañera summons creatures from Latin American folklore for a night of supernatural revenge, so brush up on one of the genre’s most recognizable legends with The Curse of La Llorona. It’s a solid, mainstream introduction to the Weeping Woman myth the maze is drawing from.

9. Terrifier 3 (2024) — for Terror Tram Starring Art the Clown

Art the Clown hijacking the backlot tram for a blood-soaked Christmas rampage lines up perfectly with Terrifier 3, which sent the killer clown on his own holiday-themed murder spree. If you can stomach it, this is the most literal prep assignment on the whole list.

10. The Purge (2013) — for The Purge: Dangerous Waters

The Purge (2013) movie poster

The Purge: Dangerous Waters brings the franchise’s lawless, anything-goes chaos to a stunt spectacular format, so start with the film that started it all. The original The Purge laid out the premise’s rules before the sequels blew the scale wide open — worth a rewatch before the show does the same thing live.

Watch it: HBO Max · Prime Video

Ten films, nine houses, one tram ride you won’t forget. Halloween Horror Nights 2026 runs select nights September 3 through November 1 at Universal Studios Hollywood — get through this list before opening night, because several of these houses aren’t shy about spoiling their own source material.
