The Dent Schoolhouse runs its full Halloween-season schedule again in 2026 inside a real 1894 Victorian schoolhouse on Cincinnati’s west side, built around the “true” local legend of a janitor named Charlie who vanished after a string of student disappearances in 1955. The attraction’s five named rooms plus its own real backstory gave us plenty to pair against.
We matched all ten of the attraction’s signature rooms and hallmarks with the horror films that best capture their spirit.
This list was checked against streaming availability as of today; platforms shift constantly.
1. [Rec] (2007) — for Detention Hall
Detention Hall’s ceiling-crawling, infected student is a dead ringer for the ceiling-crawler in this Spanish found-footage landmark — a news crew trapped inside a quarantined apartment building discovers the outbreak inside has turned its victims into something barely human.
A television reporter and her cameraman are sealed inside an apartment building alongside its infected residents during a botched quarantine — one of the tensest found-footage horror films ever made, building to a genuinely terrifying final act.

2. Nosferatu (1922) — for The Cathedral
The Cathedral’s stained-glass vampire encounter calls back to the granddaddy of all screen vampires — F.W. Murnau’s unauthorized, unforgettable silent adaptation of Dracula, still one of the most visually striking horror films ever made.
A real estate agent travels to Transylvania to close a deal with a mysterious count, unknowingly bringing a plague of death back to his own town — the silent classic that gave horror cinema its first iconic monster.

3. Candyman (1992) — for the Basement (Charlie’s Remains)
A basement haunted by the decaying remains of a local urban legend is exactly the premise of this horror classic — a graduate student researching an urban legend about a hook-handed killer finds that saying his name is more dangerous than she expected.
A grad student studying urban legends investigates the myth of Candyman, a vengeful spirit summoned by saying his name five times in a mirror, and finds the legend is disturbingly real — smart, atmospheric horror built on real urban dread.

4. The Toolbox Murders (2004) — for the Old Greenhouse
The Old Greenhouse’s chainsaw-wielding caretaker pairs with this remake of the 1970s slasher, about a killer roaming the halls of a rundown apartment building armed with an assortment of household tools.
Tenants of a decaying Hollywood apartment building start disappearing one by one, picked off by a masked killer using tools instead of a traditional weapon — grimy, effective slasher throwback.
5. Slither (2006) — for the Bubble Maze Finale
The attraction’s slimy, engulfing finale echoes this horror-comedy about a small town overrun by a parasitic alien organism that spreads through gooey, tentacled infection — gross, funny, and visually inventive.
A small West Virginia town is invaded by a parasitic alien organism that infects and mutates its residents into a single hive-minded, ever-expanding creature — James Gunn’s gooey, gleeful creature-feature debut.
6. Frailty (2002) — for The 1955 Legend
The schoolhouse’s own real local legend about missing children in 1955 pairs with this underseen thriller about a father who believes God has commanded him to hunt down demons disguised as ordinary people — and enlists his own sons to help.
A man tells an FBI agent the disturbing story of his childhood, when his father claimed to receive divine visions instructing him to murder “demons” living among ordinary townspeople — a tense, morally ambiguous slow-burn thriller.
7. Maniac (1980) — for Charlie McFree
The attraction’s central figure — the disturbed, obsessive janitor Charlie — pairs with this notorious character study of a deeply unwell killer stalking New York, told almost entirely from his own disturbed point of view.
A disturbed, isolated man stalks and murders women across New York City, scalping his victims to add to a growing collection of mannequins he dresses in their remains — grim, notorious slasher-character study.
8. The Faculty (1998) — for the Haunted-School Setting Overall
The attraction’s overall haunted-school setting calls for this late-’90s horror hit about students at an Ohio high school who realize their teachers have been replaced by parasitic alien invaders — genre horror set almost entirely within school walls.
A group of high schoolers gradually realizes their teachers are being taken over by an alien parasite, and must figure out who’s still human before it’s too late — a fun, well-cast school-set creature feature.

9. Paranormal Activity (2007) — for the Real Ghost-Tour Angle
The Dent Schoolhouse also runs a real paranormal-investigation-style ghost tour angle alongside its haunted-house scares, which pairs naturally with the franchise-starting found-footage hit about a couple documenting increasingly disturbing supernatural activity in their home.
A couple sets up a camera to document strange occurrences in their home at night, capturing an escalating series of disturbing supernatural events — the low-budget found-footage hit that launched an entire franchise.

10. The Innocents (1961) — for the 1894 Victorian Architecture
The genuine period architecture of the 1894 schoolhouse building itself calls for this gothic ghost-story classic — a governess at an isolated English estate becomes convinced her two young charges are being possessed by malevolent spirits.
A governess grows increasingly convinced that the two children in her care are being influenced by the ghosts of two former estate employees — one of the most elegantly restrained and effective ghost stories ever filmed.
The Dent Schoolhouse runs its full schedule through Halloween season 2026 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Load up your watch list, then get ready to spend a night with Charlie in one of the Midwest’s most notorious haunted houses.
