NEON has released the final trailer for HOKUM, the new supernatural folk horror from writer-director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), ahead of the film’s theatrical debut on May 1, 2026. Starring Adam Scott in a departure from his comedic work, HOKUM arrives trailing glowing reviews from its SXSW 2026 world premiere and a 96% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
HOKUM follows Ohm Bauman, a famous horror writer who travels to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes — only to find himself ensnared by the staff’s chilling tales of an ancient witch said to haunt the honeymoon suite. What begins as a somber personal errand spirals into a nightmarish confrontation with disturbing visions, a shocking disappearance, and the darkest corners of Ohm’s own past.
McCarthy (Caveat) directs from his own screenplay, reuniting with the atmospheric slow-burn sensibility that marked his breakout feature. Adam Scott leads the ensemble alongside Peter Coonan, David Wilmot, Florence Ordesh, Michael Patric, Will O’Connell, Brendan Conroy, and Austin Amelio. The film is distributed worldwide by NEON.
Critics have called HOKUM “effectively unnerving” (Variety) and “hair-raising” (IndieWire), with the Irish setting and folk horror mythology drawing comparisons to the best of the subgenre.
HOKUM opens in theaters nationwide on May 1, 2026.
