We just got a new still from the upcoming Benson and Moorhead film SYNCHRONIC, and it holds so much promise. The new movie, starring Anthony Mackie & Jamie Dornan, is directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring, The Endless). This sci/fi thriller will make its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in the Special Presentation category and we are beyond excited.
Oh yes, the full still.
Directors: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead
Starring: Anthony Mackie, Jamie Dornan, Ally Ioannides, Ramiz Monsef
Synopsis: New Orleans paramedics Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan) stumble upon a bizarre plot involving a series of drug-related deaths, in Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s (Spring, The Endless) stylish and genre-bending new film.
The wonderful thing about the films by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead is that they feel inextricably tethered to a believable reality while weaving in surreal, sci-fi, and even horror elements. The production values are kept top-notch while the flourishes are minimal and only used to enhance the story rather than become the story. Too, Benson and Moorhead extract entirely believable performances from their actors, making the extraordinary that much more believable.
So here, we have the promise of paramedics in New Orleans, a bizarre plot, drug-related deaths, and in this still, an abandoned carnival/theme park. That’s not to mention the descriptor, “Genre-Bending.” That term could actually be used to describe the team’s two features prior and affirms their understanding and abilities with such that type of endeavor. The Endless was a remarkable tale of breaking free from the safety of the known, and Spring was a surreal love story that predated The Shape of Water. They have this covered.
In short, we cannot wait to see what Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead concoct for a gritty and surreal tale in New Orleans among the ghosts of the past. Is it time for the TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL YET?
