Today A24 released the first trailer for writer/director Robert Egger’s THE LIGHTHOUSE. In his first feature since the atmospheric THE WITCH, Eggers sends us out to a lighthouse where a suspicious old lighthouse keeper (William Dafoe) is joined by a younger, newcomer (Robert Pattinson) whom he suspects of a dark past.
Say what you will about Eggers, but you cannot deny his ability as an auteur with a distinct vision. With his new trailer for the film The Lighthouse, we get a very clear sense of the mood of isolation and paranoia. That is not to mention the rich black and white 1:1 aspect ratio photography that somehow conveys the stark textures and environment of a lighthouse amid the crashing ocean. It’s good too, to see Pattinson outgrowing his Twilight origins and developing into a meatier actor with a character piece opposite Dafoe. Then there is Dafoe himself who dons a clipped New England seafarer accent that would seem at home along Captain Ahab and Ishmael.
