How Did Halloween Start?
Halloween was originally a festival called Samhain celebrated by the Celts of Ireland, England and France. It was a New Year celebration that now falls on our October 31st and November 1st. As the darker and colder season came around, people were more prone to death and disease. The Celts would try to warn away death and evil spirits of the pending season in this Samhain celebration. They would light bonfires, destroy crops and dress up to do scare away spirits.
Roman settlers who conquered the region later would then carry on the tradition merging it with their own. The festival has changed and adapted over the centuries. It can be argued it has lost much of its meaning today, as many of us believe in evil spirits less. Yet, we still celebrate it in our own way.
