The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will host its annual Monster Mash event on Friday, October 25, celebrating horror cinema and creativity through the lens of the monstrous feminine. This year’s full-day program includes screenings, workshops, and interactive experiences that highlight women’s voices and depictions in horror.
The event begins at 9 a.m. with Calm Morning: Bride of Frankenstein Sound Lab, followed by an Accessible Family Matinee at 11 a.m. marking the 90th Anniversary of Bride of Frankenstein (1935). From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., guests can enjoy special-effects makeup and hair demonstrations, showcasing the artistry behind classic and modern movie monsters.
Afternoon programming includes a 2:30 p.m. 35mm screening of The Love Witch (2016) with filmmaker Anna Biller in attendance. Visitors can also take part in tarot and palm readings, meet monsters during the Monster Meet and Greet sessions throughout the afternoon, or explore Scripted Fright Tours running from noon to 4 p.m.
At 3 p.m., the Scream Queens: Voice-Acting Drop-in Workshop invites attendees to learn the craft of horror voice performance. The day concludes with a 7:30 p.m. screening of Jennifer’s Body (2009) featuring a special appearance by filmmaker Karyn Kusama and actor Megan Fox.
With screenings, artistry, and hands-on activities, the Academy Museum’s Monster Mash offers a full day dedicated to the creativity and complexity of horror’s most iconic female figures.
