Seasons & a Muse’s acclaimed psychological thriller The Scarapist will make its streaming debut on Tubi later this month. The film, which previously won Best Horror Picture and amassed over one million views per month during its run on Amazon Prime, has now secured a new distribution agreement with InFuse Releasing.
Written, directed, and performed by Jeanne Marie Spicuzza (Night Rain), The Scarapist is based on the true story of an abusive hypnotherapist in Pacific Palisades, as first detailed in an essay by Rachel Thompson. The cast includes Katy Colloton (Teachers), R. Michael Gull (Cactus Jack), and Kyle Walsh (The Dark Knight), with Synthian Sharp co-directing.
The film follows Lana (Spicuzza), a novelist facing personal and professional challenges, who becomes entangled with Ilse (Colloton), a manipulative therapist whose methods cross into psychological torment. With the help of her “patients,” Ilse directs her control over Lana and her family, blurring the lines between therapy and terror.
Dubbed “The New Noir” by publicist Jeremy Walker (The Blair Witch Project), the film’s suburban setting and Midwest autumnal landscapes provide a stark backdrop for its unsettling themes. The Scarapist premiered at the LA Femme International Film Festival, went on to win the Verein Deutscher Und Filmemacher Award for Best Film at Berlinale, and had a limited theatrical release at Landmark Theatres before its first streaming run in 2016.
Film historian David Luhrssen described the feature as “original, disturbing,” noting its unique perspective as a story developed by a survivor of PTSD and abuse. Beyond its psychological depth, the movie also explores the darker side of New Age spirituality and introduces a distinct villain whose approach to healing becomes destructive.
With its Tubirelease, The Scarapist joins the ranks of cult horror classics distributed by InFuse, including The Wasp Woman and It Came From Outer Space. Spicuzza continues her creative journey with upcoming projects, including the horror-comedy series #VAMPOUT.
