Monstrous Books, the publishing home of Bram Stoker Award-winning editor and writer James Aquilone, has launched a new Kickstarter campaign for MONSTROUS: THE KAIJU ISSUE. The oversized anthology celebrates Japan’s legendary monster cinema while introducing original creations and fresh stories from acclaimed genre talent.
Timed with Godzilla’s 70th anniversary, MONSTROUS: THE KAIJU ISSUE features essays, comics, and stories from a notable lineup of creators. Highlights include Patrick Macias’ “Godzilla at 70,” Samuel Sattin’s “A Brief History of Kaijus,” and an original kaiju design by Dinosaur Sanctuary mangaka Itaru Kinoshita. Novelist Greg Cox contributes “The Colossus From the Crater,” while James Aquilone and Dave Swartz deliver an all-new Konga vs. Gorgo comic.
The issue also debuts a brand-new American kaiju, MegaSquatch, in a story written by Aquilone and EV Cantada. Additional features include Chris “Doc” Wyatt’s history of Godzilla toys and David Hyde’s exploration of music in kaiju films.
Three covers headline the campaign: Larry Tuason’s Konga vs. Gorgo, EV Cantada and Zac Atkinson’s MegaSquatch, and a Godzilla cover. To match the scale of its subject, the magazine expands from digest to full-size format (8.5 x 11 inches). Aquilone also announced that past issues will be re-released in this larger collectible size for a limited time.
Backers of the campaign can expect exclusive rewards, including a Kaiju challenge coin and MONSTROUS PRESENTS, a 32-page comic reprinting earlier stories.
