A new all-ages graphic novel titled Misfit Island is set to launch on Kickstarter on April 29, 2025, from the creative team behind Monster Elementary and The Kid and The Ripper. The project unites writer Nicholas Doan, artist Bobby Timony, and newcomer Sara Silver, combining their storytelling strengths into a multi-threaded tale that explores themes of identity and belonging through the lens of young monsters.
Following two award-winning volumes of Monster Elementary and other creator-owned successes, Doan returns with a concept born from collaboration. Silver, drawing on her background in film, joins as co-writer and co-creator, bringing a new perspective to the process. Timony, known for his work on DC League of Super-Pets, brings the visuals to life alongside colorist Felipe Araujo and letterer Kevin Lintz.
Set on a mysterious island called Dissidentia, Misfit Island features three interconnected stories. The Misadventures of Brody follows a group of young cryptids investigating a hidden underground house. Henry and Phoebe centers on a Frankensteinâs son trying to fit in at a new school. Grounded tells the story of Isla, a harpy who crash-lands on the mainland and must navigate human society with the help of a local boy.
The creators cite influences from 1980s family adventure films, classic monster cinema, and mythology, aimed at engaging readers of all ages. The Kickstarter campaign will offer exclusive rewards and limited edition content for backers. Interested readers can pre-save the campaign at www.misfitislandcomic.com.
