Academy Award-winning makeup and effects artist Rick Baker will be honored with the prestigious Vincent Price Award during Hollywood Horrorfest on Sunday, September 21 in Los Angeles. The celebration recognizes Baker’s groundbreaking work on An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and King Kong (1976). The award will be presented by Vincent Price’s daughter, Victoria Price.
Baker, who received his very first Academy Award from Vincent Price, noted the symmetry of the honor, saying, “Vincent gave me my first Oscar. Victoria gave me the Vincent Price Award. Now I just need the Vincent Price Cookbook and my life will be complete.”
Hollywood Horrorfest serves as the official home of the Vincent Price Award. Festival founder Miles Flanagan explained that the award “celebrates Vincent Price’s unique artistic and iconic legacy by honoring an artist whose work has achieved equally iconic status in the horror and fantasy genres.”
Following the presentation, Baker will join Flanagan for a live conversation reflecting on the inspirations and challenges behind his career in creature creation. Adding to the evening’s unique atmosphere, live music will be provided by house band The Slaughtered Lambs.
Earlier in the program, Victoria Price will share personal stories and photographs of her father, while highlighting his contributions to East Los Angeles College, home of the Vincent Price Art Museum. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Vincent Price Scholarship, which supports ELAC makeup students pursuing careers in the field.
Jessica L. Hansen of ELAC commented, “The new student scholarship is an incredible opportunity for our students pursuing makeup design. The festival’s dedication to the success of ELAC is a testament to the legacy of Vincent Price and the importance of the museum on our campus.”
Past Vincent Price Award recipients include John Landis, Joe Dante, Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson, and Sid Haig. This year’s festival will also feature a lineup of shorts, features, and events, including the presentation of the 2025 Boobs and Blood Award to Robert “Corpsy” Rhine, President of Girls and Corpses Magazine and Films.
Hollywood Horrorfest runs September 20–21, with Rick Baker’s award presentation and conversation scheduled for September 21.
