Slaterverse Pictures and Black Fawn Films have unveiled five atmospheric stills from The Undertone and confirmed the film’s world premiere on July 27 at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
The feature marks the directorial debut of writer-director Ian Tuason and stars Nina Kiri (The Handmaid’s Tale), Michèle Duquet (The Virgin Suicides), and newly announced cast member Kris Holden-Ried (The Umbrella Academy). Produced by Dan Slater and Cody Calahan, the project follows a true-crime podcast host who moves into her ailing mother’s home only to receive a series of anonymous audio files documenting another couple’s descent into paranormal terror—a story that increasingly mirrors her own life.
Tuason calls the Fantasia launch a “homecoming,” returning to the festival where he previously screened a VR short in 2016. Executive producer Chad Archibald, heading up global sales through Black Fawn Distribution’s new world-sales arm, says the film “taps into something hauntingly primal” and underscores the company’s mission to champion visionary talent.
Backed by Kino Studio and a roster of executive producers, The Undertone positions Slaterverse and Black Fawn for another festival-driven success story while giving horror fans a psychological mystery steeped in audio dread and familial unease. Additional release details for worldwide markets are expected following Fantasia’s premiere.
