Storm King Comics, the independent horror and sci-fi publisher co-founded by John Carpenter and Sandy King, has announced a milestone summer lineup — marking its 50th graphic novel with the release of Red Riding: Rise of the Alpha Huntress, followed by two major new titles arriving through August.
Red Riding: Rise of the Alpha Huntress, written and illustrated by Neo Edmund and Adira Edmund, arrives June 9 under the publisher’s Storm Kids imprint. The book follows Red Riding, a young girl gifted with ancient lunar spirit powers, who must rise to become the mythical Alpha Huntress and defend the community of Wayward from a dark enchanter.
The summer release slate continues with CHAPLAIN, debuting in the publisher’s Night Terrors imprint on July 1 in comic shops, with a wider bookstore and online release on July 7. Written by Brad and Rev. Wesley Sun (Monkey Fist) — who brings 20 years of real-world experience as a hospital and jail chaplain to the material — and illustrated by Raúlo Cáceres (Elizabeth Bathory), with colors by Ryan Winn and lettering by Marshall Dillon, CHAPLAIN follows an aging, weary chaplain who discovers an ancient, unknowable monster stalking the halls of his hospital.
The crown jewel of the summer is CATHEDRAL, John Carpenter’s (Halloween, The Thing, They Live) first-ever original graphic novel, set for release on August 4 in bookstores and online, and August 5 in comic shops. Co-written with Sandy King and Sean Sobczak, and illustrated by Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna with colors by Winn and lettering by Dillon, CATHEDRAL follows Lieutenant Christine Marks and her detectives as they investigate a gruesome murder inside an abandoned downtown Los Angeles church — only to find themselves drawn deeper into centuries-old evil imprisoned within its walls. A companion album from Carpenter will accompany the graphic novel, with further details to be announced.
“I saw it in a dream: a nightmare landscape deep underground filled with monsters too weird and sinister to exist in daylight,” said Carpenter. “I knew instantly I had to get these things out of my head and into everyone else’s brains.”
