Acclaimed documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe (78/52, Memory: The Origins of Alien) returns with Chain Reactions, a feature-length exploration of the cultural impact of Tobe Hooper’s landmark 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The documentary opens September 19 in New York at Regal Union Square and in Los Angeles at Laemmle NoHo.
Marking fifty years since the release of Hooper’s seminal slasher, Chain Reactions examines the film’s influence on both cinema and popular culture. The documentary features in-depth interviews with Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama, each reflecting on their early memories and personal experiences tied to the film.
Philippe’s work incorporates never-before-seen outtakes alongside contemporary footage and explores how different formats—from 16mm and 35mm to VHS and digital—shaped the way the film was experienced across generations.
The documentary has already received international recognition, winning the Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema. It has been an official selection at Telluride Film Festival, Sitges, BFI London Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Beyondfest, and Karlovy Vary Film Festival.
