Filmoption International has officially boarded the genre feature LUCID as its Canadian distributor and global sales agent, following the film’s sold-out world premiere at Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year. The film will make its international debut at Spain’s Sitges Film Festival, where it competes for the Noves Visions Award, followed by a U.S. premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival this month — both screenings already sold out.

Written and directed by Deanna Milligan and Ramsey Fendall, LUCID centers on Mia, an art student facing expulsion who turns to a lucid dreaming elixir to overcome her creative block. While the potion unlocks her artistic potential, it also releases the darker entities of her subconscious — including a monstrous version of her mother. Shot on 35mm and Super 8 film, LUCID blends surreal visuals with art-punk sensibilities, featuring performances by Caitlin Acken Taylor (Pistol), Georgia Acken (The Sacrifice Game), Amber Dandelion, John Luna, and RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Vivian Vanderpuss, who also designed and performs in the elaborate “hair monster” costume.

“As the film’s Canadian distributor and international sales agent, we are proud to champion a film that is so clearly resonating with audiences,” said Filmoption’s Vice-President of Distribution, Isabelle Legault. “Lucid’s originality and unique vision is what drew us to the project and we look forward to launching it globally through festivals, followed by a theatrical release in Canada.”

Milligan, a veteran Canadian actor turned director, brings her distinctive blend of emotional storytelling and dark surrealism to the project, collaborating with co-director and cinematographer Ramsey Fendall (Seymour, Skatopia: 88 Acres of Anarchy). The film features a score by Marta Jaciubek-McKeever (Fan Death), with contributions from James Wollam (Tears for Fears) and guitarist Ayla Tesler Mabe (formerly of Calpurnia).

Produced by Emanuel Foucault, LUCID was made possible through the support of Telefilm Canada and Creative BC.
