Samuel Van Grinsven’s Went Up the Hill is set for theatrical release on August 15, offering an intimate take on supernatural grief. The film stars Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) and Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Corsage), and unfolds in the remote, moody landscapes of New Zealand’s South Island.

The story follows Jack (Montgomery), a man abandoned by his mother as a child. When he travels to attend her funeral, he meets her widow, Jill (Krieps). In the nights that follow, the spirit of his late mother, Elizabeth, begins to possess both Jack and Jill, triggering a harrowing emotional and psychological unraveling.
As the characters confront buried memories and unresolved trauma, Went Up the Hill explores the lingering effects of abandonment and the boundaries of identity in the shadow of loss. The film also stars Sarah Peirse and marks another entry in Van Grinsven’s genre-focused filmography.
