Universal Pictures has announced the nationwide theatrical re-release of Jaws in celebration of its 50th anniversary. Starting August 29, Steven Spielberg’s landmark 1975 thriller will return to the big screen in 4K, with select screenings presented in IMAX®, RealD 3D, 4DX, and D-BOX.

Originally released on June 20, 1975, Jaws transformed the theatrical landscape, becoming the first film to break $100 million at the domestic box office. Credited with launching the modern summer blockbuster, the film introduced a new distribution model and set a precedent for wide-release thrillers.

At just 27 years old, Spielberg overcame production setbacks—most notably the mechanical shark “Bruce”—by focusing on atmosphere, sound design, and editing to build tension. The result was a suspense-driven thriller that continues to influence filmmakers half a century later.

Jaws received four Academy Award® nominations and won three: Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Original Score for composer John Williams. The film, adapted from Peter Benchley’s novel, follows the escalating panic on Amity Island as a great white shark disrupts the local tourist season. Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw star as the unlikely trio tasked with stopping the threat offshore.

This theatrical re-release is part of a broader global tribute that includes Jaws: The Exhibition opening at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on September 14, themed attractions at Universal Studios theme parks, a 50th anniversary merchandise line, and streaming availability on Peacock this summer.

Tickets for the August 29 screenings are available now.
