Blumhouse has announced that it will adapt James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s acclaimed comic series Something is Killing the Children into both a live-action feature film and an adult animated series. The project marks a significant expansion of one of BOOM! Studios’ most successful properties, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide since its 2019 debut.
The comic, published under BOOM! Studios—now an imprint of Penguin Random House—has become one of the most prominent original horror titles since The Walking Dead. In addition to the main series, the House of Slaughter spinoff became a major success, selling over 500,000 copies of its first issue and helping cement the franchise’s status as a modern genre powerhouse.

Blumhouse will develop both the film and television projects simultaneously. The live-action feature will be produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse alongside Stephen Christy and James Tynion IV for BOOM! Studios/Penguin Random House. Shaun Sutton and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers for Blumhouse, with Adam Yoelin, Mette Norkjaer, and series co-creator Werther Dell’Edera also attached.
Meanwhile, the adult animated series will be overseen by Tynion, who serves as executive producer. Dell’Edera will co-executive produce alongside Christy, Yoelin, and Norkjaer for BOOM! Studios.
Set in a world where children can see monsters invisible to adults, Something is Killing the Children follows Erica Slaughter, a mysterious monster hunter from an organization intent on keeping the truth hidden. The series has earned multiple Eisner Awards, with Tynion becoming the first writer since Alan Moore to win Best Writer three consecutive years (2021–2023).
Jason Blum commented, “James and Werther’s comic book series taps into our most primal fears, luring us into a fascinating world and introducing Erica Slaughter, the ass-kicking hero we all wish we had to fight the monsters that lurk in the dark.”
Tynion added, “Finding a partner who understood the potential of Erica Slaughter and the world we built was crucial, and we have found that partner in Jason Blum. Nobody understands horror better than Blumhouse.”
