The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has announced The Horror Show, an ambitious new exhibition dedicated to the enduring power and cultural significance of horror films. Opening September 20, 2026, and running through July 25, 2027, the immersive experience will explore how the genre continues to captivate audiences across generations.

“The Horror Show recognizes horror as one of the most emotionally resonant and innovative types of filmmaking,” said Amy Homma, Academy Museum Director and President. “I am excited for visitors to explore and experience filmmaking that has influenced generations.”

Curated by Jessica Niebel, the exhibition will blur the line between traditional museum presentation and atmospheric installation. Visitors will begin with a sound-based introduction before entering “The Hallway,” a transitional space inspired by a recurring horror trope. From there, six themed galleries—Gothic, Psychological, Science, Slasher, Religion, and Ghosts—will invite guests to explore iconic moments and archetypes from across horror history.

Films featured in the exhibition include Alien (1979), Dracula (1931), Get Out (2017), Halloween (1978), Midsommar (2019), The Shining (1980), The Exorcist (1973), and many others. Each gallery will examine the evolution of horror’s visual and emotional language, as well as its engagement with themes of identity, sexuality, and social commentary.

In addition to the exhibition, The Horror Show will be accompanied by a catalog and public programming, including screenings, gallery talks, and educational tours. The exhibition is organized by Senior Exhibitions Curator Jessica Niebel, with Assistant Curator Nicholas Barlow and Curatorial Assistant Alexandra James Salichs.
